Taught by Tayte McRae | Third-Generation Silversmith & Jewelry Maker
WHY THIS COURSE
You have ideas. Beautiful designs in your head that you want to create.
But without stone setting skills, you're stuck making simple pieces.
This course teaches the four most versatile setting techniques—flush bead, tube, double-walled bezel, and basket prong. The same methods professional jewelers use to create custom, high-value work, securing beautiful stones that last for generations.
You'll also learn ring construction, decorative details like pierced overlays and rope edges, and professional finishing techniques.
These skills don't just make rings. They unlock high-value custom work across every jewelry category.

Third-generation maker. First-generation jewelry specialist.
Tayte McRae didn't stand a chance at a different career.
As the son of silversmith Kelly McRae and grandson of bit and spur maker Jim Hyde, Tayte grew up with his mom's workshop on the front porch of their 900-square-foot home in the foothills south of Pincher Creek, Alberta.
He spent countless hours in the shop and traveling to trade shows, surrounded by artists and makers. It fostered a deep appreciation for quality handmade goods—and to pass the time, he drew. Endlessly.
After studying illustration and design at the Alberta University of the Arts in Calgary, Tayte moved home in 2011 and started tinkering in his mom's shop while working on the family ranch. He learned to engrave. Then, with help from his grandfather, he learned to make bits and spurs.
But over the next couple of years, that passion evolved into jewelry making.
Ten years later, countless struggles, miles on the road to shows, and unwavering support from his wife Stacey, Tayte is still making jewelry—and loving the job he gets to do, and students he gets to mentor along the way.

$3,000–$4,500 in tools and materials
This course requires a significant investment in equipment. We're not going to sugarcoat that.
Ring making and stone setting demand specialized tools—a jeweler's saw, soldering setup, polishing equipment, stone setting tools, mandrels, bezels, stones, and more.
Estimated initial investment: $3,000–$4,500
Here's why that investment makes sense:
These tools work across multiple crafts. If you've already taken Nevada's silversmithing course, you'll have some of these tools. If you plan to take other jewelry or metalwork courses, the tools overlap significantly.
Professional-grade tools last decades. This isn't disposable equipment. Quality jewelry tools are buy-it-for-life investments that hold their value.
The skills unlock high-value work
Custom stone-set jewelry commands premium prices. One commissioned ring can pay for a significant portion of your tool investment.
You don't need everything day one.
Start with essentials. Add specialized tools as your skills and projects demand them.
What's included for Doer & Dedicated students:
Complete, prioritized tools and materials list with purchase links, recommended suppliers, and "start here" vs. "add later" guidance.
Bottom line: This is a serious investment for serious makers. But if you're committed to jewelry making as a craft or business, these tools will serve you for life.

The stone-setting techniques in this course are what professional jewelers use daily. They're not beginner shortcuts—they're the real methods that create gallery-quality work.
Students who master these skills have gone on to:
Take custom ring commissions
Add high-value stone-set pieces to their product lines
Expand into pendants, earrings, and bracelets using the same techniques
Create one-of-a-kind jewelry that commands premium prices
