Essentials of Bezel Setting &

Flower Engraving

WITH NEVADA MILLER

In this combination course we are going to improve both our fabrication and engraving skills by learning how to fabricate simple bezels and how to engrave 3 types of flowers. Think turquoise and flowers…Does it get any better?

We will cover the forming process of a simple bezel followed by the soldering procedure and clean up steps. After which, I will teach you how to set the cabochon with hand tools that are inexpensive and a great way to get started with stones. Once this is covered, I will dive into how to make bezels using thicker material which requires the added step of annealing to make that shape perfect. With the thicker bezel we have the freedom to add overlays for dimension and style.

Then I will go over how I use my engraving machine to set the thicker bezel, as that material can require more than my hand strength to manipulate.

After that portion, I will lead you through the drawing process and engraving of three types of flowers: a Classic western, a half flower, and a triangular half flower.

I will teach you how to first master the simple flower then show additional cuts to make those flowers burst with life…Okay, they are still metal but you get my drift! The two half flowers would work great on a ring band or possibly as a border, you can change the size to fit whatever space. Lastly, you will learn how to sharpen your gravers because without sharp tools we can’t make beautiful cuts.

So if you have a little fabrication and engraving under your belt (click here if you need the fundamentals first) this course will help you step up your skills and add other elements to your work. All of these elements will pair beautifully with the Scottish Scrolls learned previously but if scroll work isn't your thing that's ok too!

I can’t wait to have you in this course and look forward to seeing your take on these styles and skills!

ESTIMATE INITIAL INVESTMENT COSTS FOR TOOLS & MATERIAL

We understand that deciding to invest in learning a trade takes thought and planning. As always better tools make the learning curve less steep however you can start small and add tools as you go.

Below are the tools I would priortitize purchasing for this course. Please note that the bulk of the tools are the same essential tools as in the Fundamentals of Silversmithing and the Scottish Scrolls Engraving courses. I listed only the tools specifically used in this course.

*Doer & Dedicated Levels receive full Tools & Resource Lists with course.*

  • Bench Block $14
  • Bezel Roller $4
  • Stones to set of your preference ( I get alot from Turquoise Moose and have had great results)
  • Bezel Wire (there are many kinds and patterns try a fine silver for ease of bending) $~5/ft
  • Scribe $11
  • 52 Round Graver $25
  • Will use all the same engraving euipment as the Scottish Scrolls course and the fabrication tools listed in the Fundamentals Course. If you are brand new to silversmithing and engraving I reccomend starting with those courses.

When I started making jewelry over 13 years ago I knew I really wanted

to learn silversmithing. Work, family and life put that dream on the back

burner for way too long. The upfront cost and time needed to travel to

school wasn’t something that I could do so it would have to wait. Until

one day - Nevada shared a new opportunity to learn from home at my

own pace. When she opened Be A Maker School I was waiting anxiously

to click that button and join. It’s taken me several months to get my

little workshop stocked up and hours of practicing different skills. But - I

can say with so much pride that I’ve completed several pieces and have

started a great side business for now. I LOVE it! I’m beyond grateful to

Nevada for her brilliant idea and willingness to share her knowledge. I

look forward to taking many classes in the future, furthering my skill set.
